EDITORIAL SERVICES

  • A developmental edit (for full manuscript reads only): a big picture, global look at the mechanics of the story you’re telling — what’s working, what needs more polishing, and where to go from here. I’ll be focusing on elements like character, conflict, worldbuilding, voice, and pacing and offering suggestions about how to strengthen the overall arc. This will be a written document, several pages long.

A one hour Zoom conversation to discuss editorial notes, including thoughts on character, conflict, worldbuilding, and prose. We’ll also address any additional questions you may have. This can include guidance about process, publishing, or random writing curiosities. I love questions!

    • Full manuscript — includes written editorial letter and one hour zoom meet.

    • Half manuscript plus synopsis — includes one hour zoom meet.

    • First 20 pages plus synopsis — includes one hour zoom meet.

(My primer on how to write a synopsis is here.)

Middle Grade, YA, and adult novels are all welcome.

While my genre of choice is speculative fiction (fantasy, horror, sci-fi), I’m comfortable reading most topics/genres.

Absolutely no AI or AI-assisted work accepted.

  • For full or half manuscripts, maximum three weeks from when you turn in the work, usually less.
For twenty pages plus synopsis, one week.

  • Full and Half Manuscripts: 3 cents/word.

    20 Pages Plus Synopsis: $400

  • I have published twenty books, including one anthology that I co-edited. I’ve also written comics for Marvel and Dark Horse.

I was a lead story architect on the groundbreaking Star Wars multi-platform publishing initiative, The High Republic. This meant working closely with other authors, editors, executives, and the Lucasfilm Story Group to craft a high level bird’s-eye-view narrative about massive turning points in galactic history several hundred years before the Skywalker Saga.

As an author and editor, I’ve been nominated for the World Fantasy Award, the Andre Norton Award, the Locus, the Kirkus Prize, the Mythopoeic Award, and I won the International Latino Book Award.

My YA novel Shadowshaper was named one of the best fantasy books of all time by TIME and one of eighty book every person should read by Esquire.

My work has been on the adult, YA, and Middle Grade Times bestseller lists and has become internationally bestselling.

I’ve been teaching writing for more than a decade. I’ve taught at MFA programs, Grub Street, Skillshare, Knowable, and done numerous speaking engagements, school visits, and keynotes around the country.

I’m an initiated priest of Yemaya in the Lucumí tradition and worked as an NYC paramedic for ten years.

What Clients Have Said About Working With Me

“Daniel’s workshop was like a lighthouse in the night for a ship captain lost at sea. He gently guides you through the paths you should and shouldn’t take, and by the end, you can more confidently guide your novel to a landing all on your own. It’s a workshop I’ll return to often and would love to have done again. Can’t recommend it enough!” —Ryan Malin
